News from the Bridge room in Dartmouth with Barry & Maggie Watts

November 2021

Dartmouth is the home of the Brittania Royal Naval College and one of the prettiest sheltered harbours on the South Coast. This beautiful area, was the venue for our five day bridge break at The Dartmouth Hotel. The weather stayed fine so we enjoyed gorgeous Devon by day and Bridge in the evenings.  Just a short drive away were the attractions of Dartmouth, although it was the stunning coastline between Dartmouth and Salcombe and the upper reaches of the Dart River that proved a great draw to our group, attracting walkers, bird watchers and those just seeking some fresh air and a good pub lunch.

The Dartmouth Hotel is immediately identifiable as a golf resort, with the fairways lining the entrance road and the hotel itself located within the course. Whilst it’s a beautiful golf course, it also makes for a stiff walk and a stiff challenge! However, the hotel has much more to offer than just golf and a spa, it's also a superb venue for a Bridge holiday and much more.

The hotel conference rooms are spacious and comfortable and ideal for a Bridge holiday. Located in the highest rooms, they also offer excellent views across the valley of to the finishing holes of the golf course and the hills beyond. The wonderful staff of hotel perfected the holiday. They were extremely hard working, helpful and endlessly cheerful. To top it all, the food was excellent, exceeding all expectations every day.

As always, we played Bridge every evening and there was a good turn-out every afternoon. As usual, we had a good field of players and although no pair dominated the Bridge for the whole week, the Championship Pairs Final was won convincingly with 73% by John Arblaster and Mel Barlow. At the same time, the Consolation Pairs Final was also won by a significant margin with 69% by Margaret Mason and David Lee.

The Bridge was competitive and fun. The company was friendly and, as always, the mix of new and established guests enjoyed lively conversations at dinner and in the bar after Bridge. It was great to be with our First for Bridge friends once more.
